You bought the adapter. Which app?
The adapter is just a radio — every standard ELM327-class unit reads the same data from your car. The app decides what that data is worth. There are three genuinely different categories, and most disappointment comes from buying the right adapter and opening the wrong kind of app.
The adapter is a radio
Worth internalizing before any app comparison: a standard adapter doesn't interpret anything. It relays questions from the app to the car and answers back. A $25 BLE unit and a $100 premium unit get the same answers — the premium one gets them faster, sleeps politely when left plugged in, and on some makes reaches extra manufacturer buses. So the "which adapter" question is mostly settled by platform and build quality; the which app question is where your experience is actually decided.
The three app categories
1. Scan tools. Read and clear codes, live gauges, freeze frames, readiness. This is the classic category. The good ones are honest instruments; the weak ones are code dictionaries with a gauge skin. What none of them do is reason — they show you the data and the thinking is your job.
2. Per-make coding apps. A different job entirely: changing vehicle settings — comfort features, module options — on one specific make. If that's what you want, you pick the app for YOUR make and follow its adapter requirements exactly (coding apps are often the pickiest about which adapter they support). A coding app is not a diagnosis tool, and vice versa.
3. AI diagnosis on live data. The new category: the app reads what the adapter streams — codes, freeze frames, live sensors — and reasons over it like a colleague: asks the follow-ups, watches the right sensors under the right conditions, returns ranked causes with a confidence it can defend. The test of whether an "AI" app is really in this category: does the AI actually see your car's data, or is it a chatbot sitting next to a code reader? A chatbot that can't read your live sensors is category 1 with a text box.
Match the app to the job
- "The light is on and I want to know what it means" — category 1 answers what the code says; category 3 answers what's actually wrong. A code narrows; it doesn't diagnose.
- "I want gauges while I drive" — category 1 territory, and Fixiom's free tool covers it (gauges, charts, a drive view, CSV recording).
- "I want to enable a hidden feature on my car" — category 2, chosen by make. Check its adapter list before buying anything.
- "It's intermittent and nobody can catch it happening" — this is category 3's home turf: an app that watches the right sensors while the car runs and captures the moment the fault shows itself.
Two traps to avoid
The locked-adapter trap. Some store-shelf scanner brands sell hardware locked to their own companion app — buy one and NO third-party app can ever connect to it, in any category. The adapter guide names them; check before buying hardware, not after.
The subscription-for-basics trap. Reading codes and watching live data are commodity capabilities — the car reports that data to every standard adapter alike. Be suspicious of a subscription whose main deliverable is the data your $25 radio already relays for free. Pay for what's genuinely scarce: reasoning, coverage depth, coding expertise for your make.

Common questions
Do I need a different app for a different adapter?+
Within the standard ELM327 class, no — that openness is the point: any standard app runs any standard adapter. The exceptions are locked shelf-brand adapters (no third-party app can use them, ever) and per-make coding apps, which are often picky about specific adapters.
Does a more expensive adapter give better diagnoses?+
No — the car reports identical data to every standard adapter. Premium units are faster, sleep properly when left plugged in, and reach manufacturer buses on some makes. The quality of the diagnosis comes from the app doing the reasoning, not the radio relaying the data.
What's the difference between an AI scan app and a chatbot?+
Whether the AI can see the car. A chatbot answers from your description; an AI diagnosis app reads the actual codes, freeze frames, and live sensors through the adapter, and can watch the right sensors while the car runs. Same word, different category.
Can one app read codes AND change my car's settings?+
Generally no — coding (changing vehicle settings) is a per-make specialty with its own apps and adapter requirements, separate from scan/diagnosis apps. Fixiom is deliberately read-only: scan, monitor, diagnose — never module coding.
