Where to find the VIN
Bottom of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside), the driver's door jamb sticker, your insurance card, or the registration. It's 17 letters and digits — the letters I, O, and Q are never used, so a suspicious "O" is a zero.
What the decode tells you
Model year, make, model, and the engine — decoded against NHTSA's vPIC database, which we host ourselves so the lookup is fast and doesn't depend on a government server being up. That identity is what makes the recall and bulletin checks below it accurate: both are filed by year, make, and model, and a VIN is the honest way to get those three exactly right.
