Vgate iCar Pro — buy the right variant
The iCar Pro sits in the sweet spot: cheap enough to be an easy buy, reliable enough that the community keeps recommending it year after year. One trap — it ships in multiple Bluetooth variants, and the box you pick decides whether your iPhone can use it.
The variant trap
Vgate sells the iCar Pro in more than one radio flavor. The one to buy is the Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) version — BLE is the only Bluetooth flavor iPhone scan apps can use, and it works on Android too. The classic Bluetooth 3.0 variant is Android-only, exactly like every other classic-Bluetooth adapter, and no app can change that. The listings look nearly identical; check the radio spec line before you click buy.
Its honest track record
Straight about what we know: the iCar Pro BLE 4.0 sits in our strong-track-record tier — years of consistent community reports across many apps and vehicles — rather than the tested-on-our-own-bench tier where the Veepeak BLE+ lives. That's a real distinction and we keep it visible: corroboration is evidence, but it isn't our bench. What the record consistently says: it identifies as a genuine ELM327-class implementation, holds a connection well, and behaves properly across the standard protocols.
Setup
- Plug into the OBD2 port (driver's side, under the dash); ignition on.
- BLE 4.0 version: do NOT pair in the phone's Bluetooth settings — connect inside the app. In Fixiom: OBD2 tab → Scan for adapters.
- Classic 3.0 version (Android only): pair in Android Settings first, then connect in-app.
Connection trouble? The fixes are the same for the whole adapter class — the troubleshooting section of the Veepeak guide applies verbatim: LED lit, ignition on, reseat after a brown-out, connect in-app.

Common questions
Does the Vgate iCar Pro work with iPhone?+
The Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) variant does. The classic Bluetooth 3.0 variant is Android-only — iPhones don't expose classic Bluetooth to scan apps. Check the radio spec on the listing before buying.
Is the iCar Pro as good as more expensive adapters?+
For reading codes, live data, freeze frames and emissions checks — the data is identical; the car reports the same values to every adapter. Premium units buy you speed, sleep modes for leave-it-plugged-in use, and manufacturer-bus reach on some makes — not better data.
