P0011 — intake cam timing over-advanced
Variable valve timing is a hydraulic system — it steers the camshaft with engine oil. So before this code is a parts conversation, it's an oil conversation: level, condition, viscosity, and how long ago the last change really was.

The short version
P0011 means the intake camshaft's actual timing ran ahead of what the computer commanded — over-advanced — or the timing system couldn't follow orders at all. The camshaft is steered hydraulically, using pressurised engine oil routed through a small solenoid valve into a phaser on the end of the cam.
That hydraulic detail is the whole diagnostic strategy, because everything that degrades the oil degrades the steering:
- Low oil level — the pump picks up aerated oil, pressure sags, the phaser wanders.
- Old, dirty oil — sludge and varnish are precisely what jams a phaser and blocks the solenoid's fine passages.
- The wrong viscosity — a VVT system is calibrated for a specific oil weight; a recent oil change with the wrong grade is a classic origin story for this exact code.
Check those three before anyone quotes a part. They're the cheapest items on the list, and they're implicated often enough that many shops start there on purpose.

How VVT actually works
Rotating the camshaft slightly relative to the crankshaft changes when the valves open — earlier for better response and cylinder filling in some conditions, later for others. The computer picks a target angle for the moment, then drives an oil control solenoid that ports pressurised oil into one side or the other of a phaser — a hydraulic actuator on the cam gear. Oil pushes the phaser; the phaser rotates the cam; a position sensor reports back where the cam actually is.
P0011 is the computer saying the report and the order disagree — the cam sat advanced beyond target, or responded too slowly. With clean oil at proper pressure, that points at the solenoid, the phaser, or the chain that ties the whole system together. With neglected oil, it usually just points at the oil.
The dipstick check
Engine off, cool, on level ground — this is the one genuinely useful under-hood check that needs no tools at all.
- Level. Below the hatched zone or the low mark matters here far more than most codes — VVT is often the first system to complain about marginal oil pressure.
- Condition. Jet black, gritty between the fingers, or smelling of fuel are all bad signs for hydraulic precision. Honest caveat: oil colour is a rough witness, not a verdict — diesel-dark oil in a gasoline engine that was changed recently still warrants the mileage question.
- History. When was the last change, and with what grade? An overdue interval — or a fresh change with the wrong viscosity — is a suspect all by itself. The correct grade is printed in the owner's manual and often on the oil cap.
If the level was genuinely low or the oil clearly overdue: correct that first, clear the code, and drive a few days. A meaningful share of P0011s retire right there — and if it returns on fresh, correct oil, you've eliminated the cheap cause and the parts conversation is now an honest one.
Symptoms and live data
What a wandering intake cam feels like: rough or unstable idle (advanced timing is unfriendly at low speed), a rattle at cold start (a phaser or tensioner without oil pressure for its first seconds), soft low-end power, worse fuel economy, and in stronger cases stalling at idle.
From the driver's seat, with the engine warm and idling:
- Watch idle speed and its steadiness. An idle that hunts or dips on a warm engine corroborates a timing system misbehaving at low speed.
- Watch cam position data where the vehicle reports it. Many engines expose commanded versus actual cam advance as live data; a gap between the two that persists, or an actual value that oscillates while the command holds still, is this code drawn as a picture. - Read the freeze frame. Whether the code set cold or hot, at idle or under load, narrows the story — cold-start-only faults lean toward oil flow and the phaser's lock pin; hot idle faults lean toward a lazy solenoid or worn phaser.
Causes, in order of cost
- Oil: level, age, or grade. Covered above. Cheapest, first, and genuinely common.
- The oil control solenoid sticking or clogged. Its screen and ports are fine enough that varnish chokes them. On many engines it's an accessible bolt-on part — on others it's buried; that's a service-information question for your engine.
- Sludge in the oil passages feeding the phaser — the long-neglect version of the same problem.
- The phaser itself worn or its lock pin failing — often the source of the cold-start rattle.
- Timing chain stretched or its tensioner tired — the geometry drifts and the phaser can't compensate cleanly. Usually accompanied by noise, and on high-mileage engines this is the structural suspect.
- Wiring or connector faults at the solenoid — less common, worth eyes-on before parts move.
Is it safe to drive?
Generally drivable in the short term — expect indifferent idle and soft power. Two honest cautions:
- Don't sit on it. If the root cause is oil starvation or a stretched chain, the same condition is wearing other things while you wait. A P0011 with a cold-start rattle deserves prompt attention.
- If it stalls at idle in traffic, treat it as a now problem — a stall in the wrong place is a safety issue regardless of the cause's price tag.
What a phone adapter can't see
What it genuinely gives you: the code, the freeze frame, cam command-versus-actual live data where the vehicle reports it, idle behaviour, and — combined with the dipstick — a genuinely strong first pass at oil-versus-parts.
What it cannot do:
- Measure actual oil pressure. A mechanical gauge on the engine's test port is the truth; the dash light is not.
- Inspect the solenoid — pulling it to check its screen for debris is a hands job, and on some engines a buried one.
- See chain stretch or timing marks. That's covers-off territory.
- Change your oil. Though it will happily read the code you cleared afterwards and tell you whether the story ended.
Common questions
What does P0011 mean?+
The intake camshaft on Bank 1 ran ahead of the timing the computer commanded — over-advanced — or responded too slowly to follow it. Variable valve timing steers the cam with pressurised engine oil, so the fault sits somewhere in that hydraulic chain: the oil itself, the control solenoid, the phaser, or the timing chain.
Can an oil change really fix P0011?+
Genuinely, yes — often enough that it's the standard first move. Low level, degraded oil, or the wrong viscosity all impair the hydraulic control the system depends on. Correct the oil, clear the code, drive a few days: if it stays gone, that was the fault; if it returns, the cheap cause is eliminated and the parts conversation is honest.
Is it safe to drive with P0011?+
Short-term, usually — expect a rough idle and soft power. Don't sit on it: if the cause is oil starvation or a stretched chain, damage is accruing, and a cold-start rattle alongside this code deserves prompt attention. An engine that stalls at idle in traffic is a now problem.
What's the difference between P0011 and P0012?+
Direction. P0011 is the intake cam over-advanced on Bank 1; P0012 is the same cam over-retarded. P0021 and P0022 are the same pair on Bank 2, and P0014/P0015 cover the exhaust cam. They share the same suspects — oil first, then solenoid, phaser, and chain.
What does a cold-start rattle with P0011 mean?+
A phaser or chain tensioner spending its first seconds without oil pressure — the phaser's lock pin may not be holding, or the tensioner is tired. It's the symptom that most strongly argues against ignoring the code, because it's mechanical wear happening audibly.
Will the wrong oil viscosity cause P0011?+
It can. The solenoid and phaser are calibrated around a specific oil grade, and a change to a noticeably different viscosity shifts how fast the system responds — a code appearing shortly after an oil change is a strong hint to verify the grade against the owner's manual before suspecting parts.
