P0135 — oxygen sensor heater circuit

Every modern oxygen sensor carries its own electric heater, because the sensor is useless until it's hot. P0135 says the heater circuit on the main fuel-control sensor failed — usually the element itself, occasionally something cheaper upstream of it.

Bank 1 Sensor 1 · O2 heater · P0141 is the downstream twin

The short version

P0135 means the computer found a fault in the heater circuit of the Bank 1, Sensor 1 oxygen sensor — the upstream sensor that runs your fuel mixture. The sensing part may be fine; the built-in heater that gets it working quickly is what failed the electrical check.

The realistic outcome, stated up front: the heater element is part of the sensor, so when the element itself has failed, the fix is a new sensor. But two cheaper possibilities are worth ruling out first — a blown fuse and a damaged connector or wire — because either one produces this exact code with a perfectly good sensor on the car.

Why O2 sensors have heaters

An oxygen sensor doesn't produce a usable signal until it's several hundred degrees hot. Before heaters, sensors waited on exhaust heat — minutes of driving — and until then the computer ran open loop: fuelling from fixed tables, rich and unmeasured, with no feedback.

The built-in heater collapses that window from minutes to tens of seconds. The computer switches to closed loop — steering fuel by what the sensor actually reports — far sooner, which is worth real fuel economy and emissions on every single cold start. It also keeps the sensor hot at idle, where lazy exhaust flow would otherwise let it cool below its working range.

The computer checks the heater's electrical health — its current draw and response — every drive. Out of range, and it stores this code.

The cold-start data test

You can watch the heater's absence from the driver's seat, and it's a satisfying piece of evidence.

Park on level ground, transmission in park or neutral, parking brake set. Never run an engine in an enclosed garage.

  • Cold engine, first start of the day. Put the Bank 1 Sensor 1 voltage and short-term fuel trim on screen before you start.
  • Start it and watch the sensor. With a working heater, the upstream sensor wakes within roughly half a minute to a minute on most vehicles: its trace starts switching busily, and short-term trim comes off dead zero and starts working. That trim coming alive is the visible moment the computer went closed loop.
  • With a dead heater, the sensor plays dead far longer — a flat trace and a short-term trim pinned at exactly zero for several minutes, until exhaust heat alone finally wakes it. On short winter errands it may barely wake at all.

That long-flat signature is this code's cost, drawn live: every cold start spends extra minutes running rich on guesswork.

Rule out before the sensor

  • The fuse. On many vehicles the O2 heater circuit is fused — sometimes sharing a fuse with other engine-management loads. Your owner's manual's fuse legend says whether and where for your specific vehicle; checking a fuse is a no-tools job from the fuse box. A blown heater fuse produces this code with a healthy sensor — and if a replacement fuse blows again, that's evidence of a short worth finding, not a fuse problem.
  • The connector and visible wiring. Where reachable from above with the engine off and cool: unlatch, look for green pins, melted insulation, or a harness that's been lying against hot exhaust parts, reseat firmly. O2 sensor wiring lives in a hostile neighbourhood, and heat-damaged insulation is a classic. If the connector isn't reachable without going under the vehicle, leave it for a shop — that's the line these guides don't cross.
  • Recent history. Exhaust work, engine work in that area, a rodent visit — disturbed wiring beats spontaneous sensor death as an explanation more often than people expect.

With fuse and visible wiring ruled out, the heater element inside the sensor is the remaining suspect, and the sensor gets replaced as a unit. One honest buying note: this is a part where quality matters — the sensor steers every gallon of fuel you burn, and bargain-bin units have a poor reputation for accuracy and lifespan.

Which sensor is which

  • Bank 1 — the side of the engine containing cylinder 1 (the only bank, on inline engines).
  • Sensor 1 — upstream, before the catalytic converter: the fuel-control sensor. That's this code.
  • P0141 is the same heater fault on Sensor 2, downstream — the converter-grading sensor. Same diagnosis, cheaper consequences: the downstream sensor's opinion matters mostly to catalyst monitoring.
  • P0155 is the upstream heater on Bank 2 of a V-engine.

Worth knowing: with the heater dead, the not-yet-working sensor also delays or blocks several emissions monitors from running — so a lingering P0135 can leave readiness incomplete, which is its own inspection failure on top of the code.

What a phone adapter can't see

What it genuinely gives you: the code, the cold-start wake-up test — flat sensor and zeroed trim versus a heater doing its job — the freeze frame, and the readiness picture that shows what the fault is quietly blocking.

What it cannot do:

  • Measure the heater element's resistance — the definitive sensor-versus-wiring split is a meter across the heater pins against a spec.
  • Verify power reaches the connector on command — meter, pinout, wiring diagram.
  • Reach most sensor connectors. Plenty are under-car access, which is shop territory by these guides' own rules.
  • Replace the sensor — often a straightforward job with the right socket and access, and just as often seized in an exhaust bung that's been heat-cycling for a decade. Know which one yours is before committing an afternoon.

What does P0135 mean?+

Can I drive with P0135?+

Which sensor's heater. P0135 is Sensor 1, upstream — the fuel-control sensor, where the fault costs you on every cold start. P0141 is Sensor 2, downstream — the converter-grading sensor, same diagnosis with milder consequences. P0155 is the upstream heater on Bank 2.

Will P0135 affect my emissions test?+

Twice over, potentially. The stored code with the light on is a failing result in OBD2-check states — and a sensor that starts cold and slow can delay or block other readiness monitors from completing, which fails on its own. Check readiness status before paying for a test.
