How to clear a check engine light

Clearing the light takes about ten seconds and there are plenty of guides telling you how. Far fewer tell you what it costs you — so here's the honest version.

What clearing actually does

Clearing sends one command that tells the engine computer to erase its stored fault information. The light goes out. Nothing about the vehicle changes.

That's worth stating plainly because the light going out feels like a fix, and it reliably isn't one. If the fault is still present, the computer will detect it again and the light will return — sometimes within minutes, sometimes after several drive cycles, depending on how often that particular self-test runs.

The honest use for clearing is as a test: you fixed something, you clear the code, you drive it, and you find out whether the fault returns. That's a legitimate and useful diagnostic step. Clearing to make a light go away is not.

The three things you lose

1. The freeze frame — your best evidence

When a code sets, the computer photographs the conditions at that exact moment: engine speed, engine load, coolant temperature, fuel trims, vehicle speed. For most faults that snapshot is more diagnostically useful than the code itself, because it tells you when the problem happens.

A misfire that only sets on a cold engine is a completely different problem from one that only sets under load. Clear the code and that distinction is gone. If you're going to clear, read and note the freeze frame first.

2. Emissions readiness — and this one costs money

Your vehicle continuously runs self-tests on its emissions systems: catalyst, oxygen sensors, EVAP, EGR, and others. Each has a readiness flag showing whether it has completed since the last reset.

Clearing codes resets every one of those flags to "not ready." And in most US states, arriving at an emissions inspection with unset monitors is a failing result on its own — regardless of whether any codes are present.

So clearing the light before an inspection is one of the most reliably counterproductive things you can do. You trade a specific, fixable failure for a vaguer one that takes days of driving to clear. The EVAP and catalyst monitors are among the slowest to re-set.

3. Nothing, if the code was permanent

Here's the part most guides don't mention. Vehicles from roughly 2010 onward store permanent codes in addition to the regular stored ones. Permanent codes are specifically designed so they cannot be cleared with a scan tool.

They only clear when the vehicle itself has run the relevant self-test enough times to satisfy itself the fault is genuinely gone. They exist precisely to stop someone clearing codes on the way to an inspection.

So on a newer vehicle, clearing may turn the light off while leaving a permanent code sitting there that an inspection will find. Fixiom reads all three kinds — stored, pending, and permanent — and shows them separately, so you can see whether that's your situation before you spend a test fee.

When not to clear

  • Before you've read the code and the freeze frame. You're deleting evidence you haven't looked at.
  • Before an emissions or safety inspection. Unset readiness monitors fail on their own, and the monitors that reset slowest are the ones you're most likely to be worried about.
  • To hide a fault before selling the vehicle. Beyond the ethics, permanent codes and unset readiness monitors both survive a clear, so anyone checking properly will see it anyway.
  • When the light is flashing. That's an active misfire causing damage right now. Clearing changes nothing and delays the actual problem — see what to do instead.
  • Repeatedly, to keep the light off. If it keeps coming back, the vehicle is telling you something true.

When clearing is the right move

It genuinely is sometimes:

  • You fixed the fault and want to confirm it. The primary legitimate use. Clear, drive it the way it normally failed, re-scan. If it stays gone, that's your confirmation.
  • You're running a swap test. Moving a coil between cylinders only tells you something if you clear the code first — otherwise you can't tell a new code from an old one. The method here.
  • You tightened the gas cap and want to see whether the EVAP fault returns.
  • A one-off code from a known cause — a stall from bad fuel, a sensor unplugged during other work — that you've resolved and don't expect back.

The pattern: clearing after a repair is a test. Clearing instead of a repair is avoidance.

How to do it

Any OBD2 scan tool or app with a Bluetooth LE adapter can send the clear command. In Fixiom it's on the Check codes screen, behind a confirmation step — deliberately, because it's not a button you want to hit by accident.

  • Read and note the codes and the freeze frame first. Screenshot it, or use the free codes report to save a copy you can hand to a shop later.
  • Ignition on, engine off is the standard state for clearing on most vehicles.
  • Send the clear, then re-scan to see what actually went away. If a code comes straight back, the fault is currently active — that's real information, not a failed clear.
  • Check whether permanent codes remain. If they do, the vehicle needs to satisfy itself the fault is gone; there's no shortcut.

Disconnecting the battery is the old way of doing this and it's a blunt instrument — it can also reset learned fuel trims, idle settings, radio presets, and on some vehicles more than that. A proper clear command is cleaner and more predictable.

Getting monitors ready again

After a clear, the vehicle has to re-run each self-test before the corresponding monitor reads ready. That happens through normal driving, but the tests have conditions — some need a cold start, some need sustained steady speed, some need a particular fuel level.

There's no way to force them, and no reliable universal "drive cycle" that suits every vehicle. What works is ordinary mixed driving over several days: some cold starts, some stop-and-go, some steady highway running.

Does clearing a check engine light fix the problem?+
