P0455 — large EVAP system leak
The fuel system is supposed to be sealed against vapour escaping. This code means it couldn't hold pressure — and the cheapest possible cause is also one of the most common.

The short version
Your fuel system is sealed. Fuel evaporates, and rather than let those vapours reach the air, the vehicle captures them in a charcoal canister and later feeds them into the engine to be burned. That whole arrangement is the evaporative emissions system — EVAP.
Periodically the computer tests whether the system is actually sealed, by applying pressure or vacuum and watching whether it holds. P0455 means it didn't hold, and the leak was a large one.
Start here, in this order:
- The gas cap. Loose, cross-threaded, a perished seal, or a replacement that isn't right for the vehicle. It is by a wide margin the most common cause and by an even wider margin the cheapest. Take it off, check the rubber seal for cracks and hardness, wipe the filler neck, and put it back on until it clicks.
- Whether you last filled up right before the light came on. A cap left loose after fuelling is such a common pattern that many vehicles now display a specific "check fuel cap" message before setting a code at all.
- Only then start thinking about hoses, the canister, and valves.

How the system tests itself (and why it's so slow)
The EVAP monitor is the fussiest self-test on the vehicle, and understanding why explains most of the frustration around this code.
To run the test at all, the computer typically needs a set of conditions to line up at once: a fuel level that's neither nearly empty nor nearly full, a stable ambient temperature within a certain band, the engine started from cold, and then a period of steady driving. Exact requirements vary by manufacturer, but the shape is always the same — it will not test on demand, and it may not test for days.
Two practical consequences:
- After you fix something, the light won't go out immediately. The computer has to run the monitor again to confirm the repair, and that can take multiple drive cycles across several days.
- Some vehicles will only run it in a narrow fuel-level window, so a car that lives between a quarter tank and empty may rarely get the chance.
What actually causes it
P0455 specifically indicates a large leak, which narrows things usefully — a large leak is generally something open, disconnected, or badly perished rather than a pinhole.
- The gas cap — missing, loose, damaged seal, or the wrong part. First, cheapest, most common.
- A disconnected or split EVAP hose. These lines run along the underside of the vehicle and through the engine bay, and age, heat, and road debris all take a toll. A hose that's come off a fitting is a textbook large leak.
- The purge valve stuck open. This one is worth knowing about because it causes other symptoms too — a purge valve that won't close can make the engine run oddly at idle and can throw fuel trims around.
- The vent valve stuck open, which prevents the system sealing when it tries to test.
- A damaged charcoal canister or its plumbing, often from road debris or corrosion given where it lives.
- The filler neck itself, if it's corroded enough that the cap can't seal against it — the cap gets blamed, but the sealing surface is the problem.

The inspection trap
This is the part worth reading twice, because it catches people every year.
Clearing a code resets the emissions readiness monitors — the flags showing which self-tests have completed since the last reset. In most states, arriving at an emissions test with monitors that haven't run is itself a failing result, regardless of whether any codes are present.
And the EVAP monitor is one of the slowest of all to re-set, for exactly the reasons above. So clearing a P0455 the day before an inspection converts a specific, fixable failure into a vaguer one that may take a week of ordinary driving to clear.

EVAP is less live-data-rich than most systems, but there are useful signals where a vehicle reports them:

Is it safe to drive?
A steady light with P0455 alone is not a mechanical emergency. The vehicle will generally drive completely normally, and an EVAP leak isn't damaging the engine.
Two real considerations: it's fuel vapour escaping, which is worth fixing promptly on its own terms and can produce a noticeable fuel smell, and it will fail an emissions inspection, so there's usually a deadline attached even when there's no drivability problem.
What a phone adapter can't see
What it genuinely gives you: the code and the leak size the computer estimated, freeze frame conditions, EVAP readiness status, fuel level, and vapour pressure where the vehicle reports it. For deciding whether the repair has actually taken, readiness status is the answer.
What it cannot do — and here the gap is bigger than usual:
- Find the leak. A smoke test is the definitive method for EVAP: introduce smoke into the sealed system and watch where it escapes. Nothing on the data side substitutes for it, and small leaks in particular are near-impossible without one.
- Command the valves. Cycling the purge and vent valves to test them is a bidirectional control function, which needs a professional-grade tool. Fixiom is read-only by design and won't pretend otherwise.
- Pressure-test the system. That's shop equipment.
- Inspect the cap seal or the filler neck. Both are visual checks that take ten seconds and no tools.
EVAP is the system where the honest answer is most often "check the cheap thing, then this needs a smoke machine." Knowing that before spending money is worth more than a guess.
Common questions
Is P0455 always the gas cap?+
Not always, but it's the most common single cause and by far the cheapest to check. Look for a cracked or hardened seal, cross-threading, a cap that isn't clicking, or a replacement cap that isn't correct for the vehicle. Check that before anything else.
