P0456 — very small EVAP leak

The smallest leak the system can flag — pinhole class. There are two cheap checks worth making, and past them this is the most honest 'this needs a smoke machine' code in OBD2.

The short version

P0456 means the sealed fuel-vapour system lost pressure very slowly — through a hole the computer sized as very small. The industry reference point for this class is a 0.020-inch hole: half a millimetre. That's the diameter of a sewing pin.

Two things follow from that size:

  • It's almost certainly invisible. No hiss, no smell most of the time, no drivability symptom. The code is the only witness.
  • The list of cheap checks is short and worth doing — the cap seal above all — and past it, the honest answer is a smoke test, not replacing valves on suspicion.

How a pinhole gets caught

A leak this small can't be found by watching pressure while the engine shakes the whole system — so many vehicles hunt it with the engine off. Park a warm car, and as the fuel tank cools, the vapour inside contracts and a slight natural vacuum forms. The computer seals the system and watches whether that vacuum holds through the cool-down. A pinhole shows up as vacuum that decays faster than physics says it should.

That's why this code has a signature habit: the light that's on the next morning. The failing test often ran overnight in the driveway, not while you were driving. (Not every manufacturer tests this way, but the engine-off approach is common — and either way, the monitor only runs when fuel level and temperatures cooperate.)

The same fussiness means the light lags the fix: after a repair, the monitor may take days of normal use to re-run and pass. Readiness status — free on Fixiom's emissions screen — is how you tell "not re-tested yet" from "still leaking."

What it usually is

  • The gas cap seal, aged past sealing at pinhole precision — micro-cracks in the O-ring, a hardened face, debris on the sealing surface. Also: a cap that isn't the right part for the vehicle.
  • A hairline split in an EVAP hose, typically at a fitting, typically on the underside where you can't see it.
  • The purge or vent valve sealing imperfectly — enough to fail a half-millimetre standard while working normally in every other respect.
  • A canister seam or fitting weathered by heat cycles and road spray.
  • The filler neck's sealing lip, corroded just enough that a perfect cap can't seal against it.

Notice what that list has in common: almost nothing on it can be confirmed by eye. That's the difference between this code and its bigger siblings P0442 and P0455.

What you can honestly check yourself

  • The cap seal, carefully. Off, into good light: look for radial micro-cracks in the rubber, flat spots, anything stuck to the face. Wipe the filler neck's lip clean. Refit to the click. If the cap is original on an older vehicle, a correct replacement is cheap insurance even without visible damage.
  • The fill-up habit. Topping off past the click — squeezing in that last half gallon — can push liquid fuel into vapour plumbing designed for vapour, and some P0456 stories start exactly there. Stop at the first click.
  • Visible EVAP hoses in the engine bay, engine off and cool: anything perished, chafed, or loose at its fitting.
  • Then drive normally and watch readiness. If the cap was the fix, the monitor will eventually re-run and pass, and both the light and the code's permanent copy retire on their own.

Past that list, buying parts is guessing. A smoke test finds the hole; guessing finds your card limit.

The inspection trap

Same trap as every EVAP code, sharper here because the monitor is so slow: clearing the code resets readiness, and unset monitors fail inspections on their own. Fix, clear, drive for days, verify readiness, then test. What a phone adapter can't see

What it genuinely gives you: the code and its leak-size class, permanent-code status, EVAP monitor readiness, fuel level, freeze frame, and vapour pressure where the vehicle reports it. That's enough to know what you're dealing with and whether a fix has proven itself.

What it cannot do — and for this code the gap is the diagnosis:

  • Find a half-millimetre hole. That is what smoke machines exist for. A shop introduces vapour into the sealed system and watches where it escapes; some leaks this size take dye or an ultrasonic listener even then.
  • Seal and pressurise the system on command — bidirectional control, professional-tool territory. Fixiom is read-only and says so.
  • See the underside plumbing at all.

Walking into a shop with "P0456, cap seal inspected and replaced, readiness re-run and still failing — it needs smoke" is a fundamentally different visit from walking in with a lit dash light. That sentence is this page's cash value.

Common questions

What does P0456 mean?+

The computer pressure-tested the sealed fuel-vapour system and it leaked down very slowly — consistent with a very small hole, the class calibrated around 0.020 inches, about half a millimetre. It's the smallest leak the system can flag, with no symptom beyond the light on nearly all vehicles.

Is P0456 serious?+

Mechanically, no — the engine is unaffected and the vehicle drives normally. It's a small amount of fuel vapour escaping, and it will fail an OBD2 emissions inspection, which is usually what puts a deadline on it.

Can a loose gas cap cause P0456?+

Yes — at this leak size, an aged cap seal with micro-cracks or a slightly corroded filler-neck lip is a prime suspect, and the cap is the one genuinely cheap check. Inspect the seal in good light, clean the neck, refit to the click, and consider a correct replacement cap if the original is old.

Why did the light come on the morning after I parked?+

Many vehicles run their very-small-leak test with the engine off, using the natural vacuum that forms as the warm tank cools after parking. A failing overnight test showing as a morning light is this code's signature timing, not a coincidence.

How do shops find a leak this small?+

A smoke test: the EVAP system is sealed and filled with a visible vapour, and the technician watches where it escapes. For the smallest leaks it can take dye or ultrasonic detection on top. There's no data-side substitute — this is genuinely a hands-and-equipment job.

How long does the EVAP monitor take to re-run after a fix?+

Days is normal. It wants a mid-range fuel level, particular temperature conditions, a cold start or an overnight cool-down depending on the design — and it won't run on demand. Check the EVAP monitor's readiness status rather than judging by whether the light is still on.
