P0442 — small EVAP system leak

The fuel system is supposed to hold pressure like a sealed bottle. This code means it leaked down slowly — a small leak, which is cheaper news than a broken part but harder news to pin down.

The short version

Your fuel system is sealed so vapour can't escape to the air, and the computer periodically pressure-tests that seal. P0442 means the test failed through a leak it sized as small.

The practical order, cheapest first:

  • The gas cap seal. Take the cap off and look at the rubber seal: cracks, hardness, flat spots, debris stuck to it. Wipe the filler neck, refit until it clicks. An aged seal that still "closes" is exactly the kind of leak this code describes — and if the cap is old, a correct replacement cap is one of the cheapest parts on the car.
  • Think back to your last fill-up. A cap left one click short after fuelling is a classic P0442 origin story.
  • Then stop guessing. Past the cap, a small EVAP leak is hairline-crack territory — hoses, valve seals, canister fittings — and the honest tool for finding one is a smoke test, not a parts cannon.

What 'small' means here

The EVAP family of codes is sorted by the size of leak the computer estimated from how fast pressure decayed. P0442 is the middle child: commonly described as a leak on the order of a millimetre — the industry reference point is a 0.040-inch hole — though the exact calibration varies by manufacturer.

  • P0455 — large leak. Usually something open, disconnected, or badly perished. The easiest to find.
  • P0442 — small leak. A degraded seal, a cracked hose, a fitting that weeps. Findable, but rarely by eye.
  • P0456 — very small leak. Pinhole class, and the hardest hunt of the three.

The size matters because it sets expectations: a P0442-sized leak is usually invisible, silent, and has no drivability symptom at all. The code is often the only evidence that anything is wrong.

Why the light lags by days

The EVAP monitor is the fussiest self-test on the vehicle. To run at all it typically wants a fuel level in a middle band — not near empty, not brimmed — a cold start, stable temperatures, and then some steady driving; many vehicles also run their small-leak check with the engine off, using the vacuum that forms naturally as a warm tank cools after you park. Exact recipes vary by manufacturer, but the consequence is universal:

  • The test does not run on demand. It may not run today. It may not run this week, if the fuel level never sits in its window.
  • After a repair, the light stays on until the monitor re-runs and passes — often several drive cycles across several days. A light still on the morning after a new cap means nothing yet.

What actually causes it

  • The gas cap seal — aged rubber, a damaged sealing face, the wrong cap for the vehicle, or a filler neck corroded enough that a good cap can't seal against it.
  • EVAP hoses with hairline cracks, usually at the ends where they stretch over fittings, and usually invisible without smoke.
  • The purge valve not sealing perfectly when closed — enough to leak down a pressure test without any drivability symptom. A purge valve stuck properly open usually announces itself with idle trouble and fuel-trim chaos instead.
  • The vent valve not sealing fully when commanded closed for the test.
  • Charcoal canister fittings and seams — the canister lives under the vehicle where road debris and corrosion find it.
  • The filler neck itself on older or rust-belt vehicles — the cap takes the blame, the sealing surface is the culprit.

The permanent-code wrinkle

EVAP faults are one of the most common places people first meet a permanent code. Since roughly 2010, vehicles keep a separate copy of emissions codes that cannot be erased by a scan tool or a battery disconnect — it only goes away after the vehicle re-runs the relevant monitor and passes it.

So it's completely normal to clear a P0442, see the regular code disappear, and find its permanent twin still sitting there. That's not a failed clear — it's the system working as designed, holding the record until the fix proves itself. The inspection trap

Is it safe to drive?

Yes, in the mechanical sense — a small EVAP leak doesn't hurt the engine, and the vehicle drives normally. The reasons not to sit on it: it's fuel vapour escaping, it occasionally comes with a faint fuel smell, and it fails an OBD2 emissions inspection. A deadline, not a breakdown.

What a phone adapter can't see

What it genuinely gives you: the code and the leak size class, the permanent-code record and what it means, freeze frame conditions, EVAP readiness status, fuel level (which decides whether the monitor can even run), and vapour pressure on vehicles that report it.

What it cannot do:

  • Find the leak. A smoke test is the definitive method for small EVAP leaks — introduce vapour into the sealed system, watch where it escapes. Nothing on the data side substitutes.

Is P0442 just a loose gas cap?+

Often, but not always. A cap left loose after fuelling or an aged cap seal is the most common and cheapest cause, so it's checked first. Past the cap, P0442 usually means a hairline leak — a cracked hose, a weeping valve seal, or a canister fitting — which generally takes a smoke test to find.
