Bad spark plug symptoms

The short version

A worn spark plug has a wider gap than it should, which means it needs more voltage to fire — and eventually the ignition system can't reliably supply enough. The result isn't usually one dead cylinder. It's a spark that's weaker and less consistent across several cylinders at once, especially under the conditions that ask the most of it: cold starts, hard acceleration, and load.

The symptom list

  • Rough or unsteady idle — a slight shake or unevenness at a stop that wasn't there before, especially noticeable sitting in gear at a stop light.
  • Hesitation or a flat spot under acceleration — a moment where the engine feels like it's thinking about it before responding to the throttle, most noticeable accelerating hard from a stop or merging onto a highway.

One cylinder, or all of them?

This is the single most useful question to answer before assuming plugs, and it's answerable for free. Most spark plug sets wear at close to the same rate, because they're doing close to the same job under close to the same conditions — so when they start causing trouble, it tends to show up as a little bit of trouble everywhere, not a lot of trouble in one place.

Something local to that one cylinder (its coil, its injector, or a vacuum leak on that runner) is the more likely story. P0301's swap test is the way to chase that down.

Why a worn plug causes each symptom

A spark plug's gap — the small air space the spark has to jump — widens slowly as the electrode erodes with normal use. A wider gap needs more voltage to fire reliably. For a while the ignition coil has enough voltage in reserve to cover the difference and nothing changes that you'd notice. Eventually the margin runs out, and it runs out first under exactly the conditions that already demand the most voltage: a cold, dense cylinder at start-up, or a cylinder under heavy load where compression pressure itself makes the spark harder to jump the gap through.

When the spark is late, weak, or occasionally misses, combustion is less complete. Less complete combustion is less power from that cylinder on that stroke (hesitation, roughness), more unburned fuel going out the exhaust rather than doing useful work (worse economy), and a cylinder that's harder to light from a cold, low-voltage-margin start (hard starting). It's the same root cause showing up as four different-sounding complaints.

How many miles is "worn"?

It depends heavily on the plug material and the manufacturer's own interval, which varies a lot: older or basic copper plugs are often good for something like 20,000–30,000 miles, while modern iridium or platinum plugs are frequently rated well past 60,000–100,000 miles. There's no single universal number — your owner's manual or service information for your specific engine is the real source, not a generic rule of thumb. Symptoms that match the pattern above on a vehicle nearing or past its plugs' rated interval are a strong reason to check them regardless of exact mileage.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Mild symptoms — a little roughness, slightly worse economy — aren't an emergency, and plenty of people drive on tired plugs for a while without incident. Once misfires are frequent enough to trip a stored code and a steady check engine light, it's worth getting to soon rather than indefinitely, since unburned fuel from ongoing misfires is exactly what damages a catalytic converter over time.
