Car shaking at idle
A shake at idle that smooths out once you're moving has a short list of causes. The first fork is whether the check engine light is on — that single fact splits the list roughly in half.
Start here: is the check engine light on?
It's the fastest useful split available, and it costs nothing.
- Light on → the computer has already noticed something and stored a code about it. That code is almost certainly related to the shake, and reading it skips most of the guesswork. Go here.
- No light → whatever is causing the vibration isn't something the computer monitors, or isn't bad enough to flag yet. That points at a different set of causes — often mechanical or airflow-related. Go here.

With a check engine light on
The overwhelmingly likely answer is a misfire — one or more cylinders not contributing properly, which makes the engine run unevenly. At idle there's no road noise or road speed to mask it, which is exactly why it feels worst sitting still.
- A cylinder-specific code like P0301 names the cylinder and points at spark, fuel, or compression on that cylinder. There's a conclusive swap test for it.
- P0300 means the misfires were spread out — think shared causes like worn plugs across the set, a vacuum leak, or fuel delivery.
- A lean code like P0171 alongside the shake very often means a vacuum leak, which causes both symptoms at once. Vacuum leaks matter most at idle for the same reason the shake does — airflow is lowest, so an unmetered leak is a bigger share of it.
- An EGR code points at exhaust gas being recirculated when it shouldn't be, which dilutes the mixture at idle specifically.
Even with the code in hand, the per-cylinder misfire counts under Mode 06 are worth a look — they often name a favourite cylinder even when the code says the misfire was random. Fixiom shows them on the emissions screen.
With no check engine light
Now you're looking at things the computer either doesn't monitor or doesn't consider out of range yet:
- Worn or collapsed engine mounts. The most common no-light answer. Mounts isolate normal engine vibration from the body, and when one fails you feel vibration that was always there. Classic tell: the shake is noticeably worse in Drive at a stop than in Park or Neutral, and often worse with the air conditioning on.
- A dirty throttle body or idle air control passage. Carbon builds up and restricts the small airflow the engine needs at idle. Usually gradual, and often paired with an idle that sits lower or wanders.
- A vacuum leak too small to set a code yet. The computer compensates with fuel trim until it runs out of room; before that point you can get a rough idle with no light. Fuel trims will show it long before a code does.
- Aged spark plugs. A set near the end of its life can cause a rough idle that isn't yet bad enough to trip a misfire code.
- The air conditioning compressor cycling, if the shake appears and disappears in a rhythm. Some vibration when the compressor engages is normal; a lot isn't.
- Something that isn't the engine at all — an exhaust component contacting the body, or a heat shield resonating. These often change pitch or disappear entirely if you rev slightly.
What the idle RPM tells you
Put engine RPM on screen at a warm idle and chart it. The shape of the line separates two families of problem that feel similar from the driver's seat:
- Steady RPM, rough feel → the engine is holding its target speed but running unevenly. That's combustion quality: a misfire, an injector, a plug. The computer is managing fine; the cylinders aren't.
- Wandering or hunting RPM → the engine can't hold a steady idle. That's airflow or idle control: a vacuum leak, a dirty throttle body, or an idle-control fault. The line visibly rises and falls rather than sitting flat.
- Unusually low idle that sometimes nearly stalls → often airflow restriction or a significant leak.
Fuel trims are worth having on screen at the same time. Long-term trim well positive at idle that improves as you raise engine speed is close to a signature for a vacuum leak — the reasoning is in the P0171 guide.
The in-gear test
A quick, free check that separates mounts from combustion, and it takes about a minute.
Parking brake firmly set, foot solidly on the brake, both the front and the rear of the vehicle clear of anything and anyone, on level ground. The test uses Drive and Reverse, so check behind you as carefully as in front. Do this once, briefly, and don't get out of the vehicle while it's in gear.
With the engine warm, note how the shake feels in Park. Then, holding the brake, move to Drive and note it again, then Reverse.
- Noticeably worse in gear than in Park → points at engine mounts. Load pulls the engine against the mounts, and a failed mount lets it move.
- About the same in all positions → points at combustion. A misfire doesn't care what gear you're in.
- Worse with the air conditioning on → additional load, which tends to exaggerate both mount problems and a marginal idle.
What a phone adapter can't see
What it genuinely gives you: stored codes, freeze frame conditions, per-cylinder misfire counts, live RPM you can chart to see whether the idle is steady or hunting, fuel trims, and airflow readings. That covers the whole combustion side of this diagnosis.
What it cannot do:
- See a collapsed engine mount. That's a visual and physical check, and it's the most common no-light cause.
- Find a vacuum leak. A smoke test locates it; data only tells you one exists.
- Assess a dirty throttle body. Looking at it takes seconds and no data will substitute.
- Feel the difference between a vibration and a rough-running engine. Those are genuinely different sensations and you're the one sitting in the car.
Data narrows it to a family. The last step is usually hands, eyes, or a shop — and knowing which family you're in first is what stops that visit turning into an exploratory one.
Common questions
Why does my car shake at idle but not when driving?+
At idle there's no road speed or road noise to mask engine vibration, and the engine is running at its lowest airflow — which is exactly when a vacuum leak, a misfire, or a failed engine mount shows most. Once you're moving, both the masking and the higher airflow hide it.
Can a bad engine mount cause shaking at idle?+
Yes, and it's the most common cause when there's no check engine light. The giveaway is that the shake is noticeably worse in Drive at a stop than in Park or Neutral, and often worse with the air conditioning on.
How do I know if it's a misfire or something else?+
If the check engine light is on, read the code — a misfire code confirms it and often names the cylinder. If there's no light, chart the idle RPM: steady RPM with a rough feel points at combustion, while wandering RPM points at airflow or idle control.

Is it safe to drive a car that shakes at idle?+
If it drives normally otherwise and the check engine light isn't flashing, usually yes in the short term. A flashing light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter — stop driving. Persistent misfires are worth sorting promptly regardless.
