P0174 — system too lean (Bank 2)
This is P0171's twin on the engine's other cylinder bank. The single most useful fact about it is whether its twin is present at the same time — that one detail splits the cause list in half before you touch anything.

The short version
P0174 means the computer has been adding extra fuel on Bank 2 for a while and wants you to know it's running out of adjustment room. The oxygen sensor on that bank keeps reporting more oxygen than expected — a lean mixture — so the computer compensates with longer injector pulses, and when that correction stays large it sets the code. It is a trend the computer noticed, not a failed part.
Lean means one of three things: air the engine didn't measure (a vacuum or intake leak), air it measured wrong (an under-reporting airflow sensor), or fuel it asked for but didn't get (weak pump, clogged filter or injectors). Every one of those looks different in live data, and the most important clue is free: whether P0171 set alongside it.
- P0174 and P0171 together — the cause is something BOTH banks share: a manifold or PCV leak, the airflow sensor, or fuel delivery. Do not chase one bank's parts.
- P0174 alone — the cause lives on Bank 2's side: that bank's intake gasket, a hose reaching only that runner, an injector on that bank, or that bank's front oxygen sensor drifting.

Which side is Bank 2?
Bank 2 is the cylinder bank that does NOT contain cylinder 1. Which physical side that is depends on the engine — on many V6 and V8 trucks it's the driver's side, on others the passenger's. Your service information settles it for your engine; don't buy parts off a forum guess about which side is which.
One structural fact worth knowing: an inline four-cylinder has only one bank, so it can only ever set P0171. If you're seeing P0174, you're working on a V6, V8, or a flat/boxer engine — which is exactly why the pair rule below exists: there are two banks for the computer to compare, and the comparison is diagnostic gold.
The pair rule: alone vs. together
Both banks breathe through the same intake, read the same airflow sensor, and drink from the same fuel pump. So:
Both codes together (P0171 + P0174): the fault is upstream of the split — unmetered air entering the shared manifold (vacuum hose, PCV system, intake boot, brake booster), an airflow sensor under-reporting for the whole engine, or fuel starvation reaching both rails. A converter, an individual injector, or one bank's oxygen sensor cannot do this. Buying bank-specific parts for a both-banks code is the classic wasted repair.
P0174 alone, Bank 1 healthy: now the shared systems are largely exonerated — a shared leak would lean both banks. Suspicion moves to what only Bank 2 owns: the intake gasket on that side (they warp and seep on plenty of V-engines), a vacuum line that tees into one runner, injectors on that bank, or that bank's upstream oxygen sensor reading lean when the mixture isn't. The two-minute trim test
Watch four signals at a warm idle: short- and long-term fuel trim for both banks (STFT1/LTFT1 and STFT2/LTFT2). Add them per bank — total trim near zero is healthy; a total holding above roughly +10% is the lean correction that set your code. Then raise the engine to a steady ~2,500 rpm for thirty seconds and watch what the totals do.
- High at idle, falls toward normal with rpm: classic unmetered-air signature. A fixed-size leak matters a lot at idle's low airflow and proportionally less at speed. Both banks high → shared leak; Bank 2 only → that side's gasket or hose.
- High everywhere, or worse with rpm: points away from a simple leak — toward the airflow sensor under-reporting or fuel delivery falling behind demand. (A dirty MAF is cheap to rule out: the cleaning guide covers doing it without wrecking the sensor.)
- Bank 2 high while Bank 1 sits near zero, at all rpm: bank-specific and persistent — that bank's injectors or its front oxygen sensor move up the list.

What each pattern means
Shared lean (both banks): start with the cheap physical realities — the big intake boot clamps, visible vacuum lines, the PCV hose and valve, the brake booster line. A hose you can hear hissing at idle beats any sensor theory. Then the airflow sensor, then fuel supply.
Bank 2 only: compare the banks live first (above). If Bank 2's lean correction is real and stays, that side's intake gasket and injector balance are where a shop will look — and the trim data you captured is exactly what to hand them, because it already rules out half their diagnostic hour.
Neither pattern holds / trims look normal now: lean codes can be intermittent (a leak that opens with engine rock under load, fuel supply that only sags at highway demand). The freeze frame stored with the code — rpm, load, speed at the moment it set — tells you which conditions to reproduce while watching the trims.
Is it safe to drive?
Short trips to diagnose, generally yes. A steady lean condition is still worth respecting: lean mixtures burn hotter, and a lean-enough bank starts to misfire under load — if the light ever starts flashing, that's the stop-driving signal, because raw fuel from misfires destroys catalytic converters. A lean code plus new misfire codes (P0300-family) on the same bank is the same escalation told two ways.
Clearing the code
Clearing P0174 without changing anything invites it straight back — the computer will re-learn the same correction and re-set the code once the long-term trend rebuilds. Clear it after a repair to verify the fix: watch the trims settle near zero over a few drives. Clearing also resets the readiness monitors and erases the freeze frame, so capture what you want to keep first.
What a phone can't see
Live trims tell you which family the fault is in — they don't put a finger on the leak. A smoke test finds the actual gap; a mechanical fuel-pressure gauge settles fuel delivery on vehicles that don't report rail pressure over OBD2 (many don't); an intake gasket verdict is a hands-on job. What the adapter data does is make sure the hour of hands-on work happens on the right bank and the right system — which is most of the bill.

Can I drive with P0174?+
Short diagnostic driving is generally fine. Sustained lean running burns hotter and can progress to misfires under load — and a flashing check engine light means stop, because misfire-level damage to the catalytic converter gets expensive fast.
Is P0174 just a bad O2 sensor?+
Sometimes — but it's the less common cause, and the data usually says so first. A drifting front O2 sensor tends to lean one bank at all conditions while the other bank sits normal. Leaks and airflow-sensor faults have different signatures, which is what the trim test on this page separates.
