P0441 — evaporative system incorrect purge flow
This one gets lumped in with the EVAP leak codes and it isn't one. P0441 means the computer measured how vapor was moving through the purge system and the flow itself was wrong — not that the system has a hole in it.

The short version
P0441 means the computer expected vapor to be flowing through the purge system at a certain rate, and what it actually measured didn't match. That's a flow problem — a valve stuck, blocked, or leaking in a way that changes flow — not a hole in the sealed system.
P0442 (small leak) and P0455 (large leak) are graded by the size of a leak found while the system is sealed and under vacuum or pressure. P0441 is a completely different test: it's watching flow while the purge valve is supposed to be open and doing its job, and the number doesn't add up. Same general system, genuinely different fault family — worth knowing before assuming this is "another leak code."

Why this isn't a leak code
Every gas tank builds up fuel vapor. The EVAP system's job is to store that vapor in a charcoal canister rather than vent it to the air, then periodically purge it — draw it into the engine to be burned — through a valve the computer controls. Two very different things can go wrong with that system: it can leak (a hole lets vapor or outside air where it shouldn't be), or the purge itself can be wrong (the valve doesn't open enough, doesn't open at all, opens when it shouldn't, or the flow just doesn't match what the computer commanded).
P0441 is squarely the second kind. It matters because the fixes barely overlap: a leak code sends you looking for a crack, a loose cap, or a disconnected line; a flow code sends you looking at the purge valve itself, its wiring, or something physically blocking the path — a canister so clogged nothing can move through it, or a pinched or kinked purge line.
Stuck closed vs. stuck open
The purge valve failing in either direction can trigger this code, and they point at genuinely different repairs, so it's worth thinking about which one you likely have before assuming a part:
- Stuck closed (or blocked path): the computer commands purge and nothing happens. No symptom you'd necessarily notice while driving — the vehicle runs fine, it just isn't purging vapor when it should. This is the more common of the two.
- Stuck open (or leaking closed): vapor — and unmetered air along with it — keeps entering the intake even when the computer wants purge off, most noticeably at idle. This one behaves a lot like a small vacuum leak: a rough or unstable idle, and fuel trims pulled toward lean specifically when purge should be at zero. The exception is a canister loaded with vapor — right after a fill-up, the same stuck-open valve feeds the engine fuel vapor instead of plain air, so trims can swing rich and the engine can be hard to start for a moment.
The read-only test
Fixiom has no way to command the purge valve open or closed — it doesn't send control commands to any component, on any vehicle. What it can do is watch what the computer is already doing and reporting, which is enough to lean toward one failure mode over the other:
- Watch fuel trims at a warm, steady idle for a few minutes. A trim that stays flat and normal argues against a stuck-open valve. A trim that's pulled noticeably lean, especially one that shifts the moment you'd expect purge activity to start or stop, argues for it.
- Watch idle quality itself — a stuck-open purge valve reads to the engine almost exactly like an unmetered air leak, and a rough or hunting idle alongside a lean trim shift is the pattern.
- Where your vehicle reports it, watch the commanded purge value (some vehicles expose it as a live PID) against fuel trims over a short drive — a commanded value that changes with no matching effect on trims points toward a valve or a blocked path that isn't actually responding.
None of this pins down "the valve" with certainty by itself — it's a lean toward stuck-open versus stuck-closed, which narrows what to check first once you're at the vehicle.
What Mode 06 adds
Underneath the code, many vehicles run an actual purge-flow monitor test and store a measured result against a limit — available over the same port as Mode 06. Fixiom shows these on the emissions screen the same way it does for the catalyst monitor behind P0420: the test, its result, and the threshold it failed against, so "the computer says purge flow is wrong" comes with a number instead of just a verdict.
Some of these tests are manufacturer-defined rather than standardized — Fixiom shows the result and marks it as manufacturer-specific rather than pretending to know exactly what it measures. Emissions readiness and Mode 06 are part of the free emissions check.
Likely causes, in order
- The purge valve (purge solenoid) itself — mechanically stuck in either direction, or electrically not responding to commands.
- A clogged charcoal canister — enough restriction and nothing can flow correctly even with a perfectly good valve.
- A pinched, kinked, or disconnected purge line between the canister and the intake.
- Wiring or a connector at the purge valve.
- A vent valve or vent-side restriction on some designs — purge needs a fresh-air path in through the vent side to work at all.
Is it safe to drive?
On its own, P0441 is an emissions fault, not a mechanical one — most vehicles drive completely normally with it set. The exception is a stuck-open valve rough enough to cause a genuinely unstable idle; that's more of an annoyance and a fuel-economy hit than a hazard, but it's worth diagnosing rather than living with. As always, a check engine light that starts flashing is a different and more urgent situation, unrelated to this specific code.
What a phone can't see
What it genuinely gives you: the code, freeze frame, fuel trims and idle behavior to lean toward stuck-open versus stuck-closed, commanded purge where the vehicle reports it, and the Mode 06 purge-flow test result against its limit.
What it cannot do:
- Command the purge valve to test it directly. That needs a scan tool with bidirectional control, which Fixiom deliberately doesn't do on any system.
- Physically inspect the valve, the canister, or the purge line for a blockage or a stuck mechanism.
- Bench-test a solenoid for correct electrical response.
Live data gets you a strong lean on which failure mode you're chasing. Confirming which specific part needs replacing is a hands-on job.
Common questions
Is P0441 the same as P0442 or P0455?+
No. P0442 and P0455 are leak-size codes, set when the sealed EVAP system fails a leak test by roughly a small or large amount. P0441 is a completely different test — it means vapor flow through the purge system, while the valve is supposed to be working, didn't match what the computer expected. Different fault family, different fixes.
Can a bad gas cap cause P0441?+
Not typically — a loose or damaged gas cap is the classic cause of the leak codes (P0442/P0455), since it breaks the system's seal. P0441 is about flow through the purge valve, not the system's seal, so the gas cap is rarely the answer here.
How do I know if the purge valve is stuck open or stuck closed?+
A stuck-open valve behaves like a small vacuum leak — it lets air and vapor into the intake even when purge should be off, most noticeable as lean fuel trims and rough idle at a warm idle (or a rich swing and a hard start right after refueling, when the canister is full of vapor). A stuck-closed valve or blocked path usually shows no driving symptom at all — the vehicle just isn't purging when it should.
Can Fixiom test the purge valve directly?+

Is P0441 safe to drive with?+
Generally yes — it's an emissions fault, not a mechanical one, and most vehicles run fine with it. A stuck-open valve rough enough to upset idle is more of an annoyance than a hazard, though it's worth fixing for fuel economy and idle quality.
