Bad ignition coil symptoms
On a coil-on-plug engine — which is most of them — each cylinder has its own coil, and one failing doesn't get compensated for by the others. It hits that one cylinder hard, which is a close-to-opposite pattern from worn spark plugs.
The short version
A failing ignition coil doesn't usually cause a gentle, spread-out weakness the way worn spark plugs do — it tends to knock out one cylinder's spark hard. On most modern engines, each cylinder has its own dedicated coil sitting right on top of its plug (coil-on-plug). One coil failing is a one-cylinder problem, and the others can't compensate for it, because each one only ever fires its own plug. (Older engines with a coil pack feeding two cylinders at once — wasted spark — behave the same way at a slightly larger scale: a bad coil takes out that pair, still a localized pattern rather than a spread-out one.)
That's the tell worth checking before replacing anything: a misfire concentrated on a single cylinder while the rest stay clean points at that cylinder specifically — the coil, or something else local to it. A misfire spread lightly across most or all of them points somewhere else entirely, most often worn spark plugs.

The symptom list
- A distinct engine shake or vibration, often felt through the whole car at idle — usually stronger and more noticeable than the light roughness a set of tired plugs produces, because it's concentrated in one cylinder instead of spread thin.
- Reduced power or a stumble, especially noticeable under load or hard acceleration.
- A check engine light with a single-cylinder misfire code — P0301 through P0312, depending on which cylinder — far more often than the random/multiple code, P0300, that a worn plug set tends to produce.
- Rough or unstable idle that's noticeably worse than it used to be.
- Worse fuel economy.
- Hard or longer starting, since the engine is catching on one fewer cylinder. A single dead coil rarely causes an outright no-start on its own — the other cylinders still fire.
- An occasional audible tick from the coil area on some designs — a sign of internal arcing rather than a clean failure.
One cylinder, or several? The tell
Because each cylinder has its own coil, a failing coil is nearly always isolated — one cylinder misfiring hard while the rest run clean. That's close to the opposite signature from worn spark plugs, which tend to wear at similar rates across the whole set and produce light misfires spread across most or all cylinders at once, rather than concentrating in one.

Why coils fail where they live
A coil-on-plug unit sits directly above the spark plug, right against the engine, which means it spends its whole life absorbing engine heat and vibration. A few things tend to shorten that life:
- A cracked or degraded boot — the rubber sleeve that seals around the spark plug — letting moisture in. This produces a genuinely useful clue on its own: a misfire that shows up specifically in the rain, or right after driving through a car wash, and clears up once things dry out, is a strong lean toward a boot letting moisture reach the plug or the coil's own connection.
- Ordinary age and heat cycling, which eventually breaks down the coil's internal windings.
- A spark plug that's badly worn or gapped too wide, which makes its coil work much harder to jump that gap every time it fires — shortening the coil's life. A coil replaced without addressing a badly worn plug set can fail again before long.
- Carbon tracking on the boot — a visible black trail on the rubber where spark has arced to a ground path instead of jumping the plug's gap correctly. A visual clue for whoever pulls the coil, not something a live reading can show.

- Pull any stored codes and check the Mode 06 per-cylinder misfire counts — one cylinder dramatically worse than the rest is the pattern described above.
- If a single-cylinder code is stored, P0301's swap test is the direct confirming test: move the suspect coil to a different cylinder, clear the code, drive it the way it normally misfires, and re-scan. If the misfire follows the coil to its new cylinder, you've found it. If it stays on the original cylinder, that cylinder's plug or injector is next.
- Watch whether the misfire correlates with wet weather — rain, or right after a wash — versus showing up consistently regardless of conditions. A weather-linked pattern leans toward a boot letting moisture in; a constant one leans toward the coil failing on its own, independent of moisture.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Mild symptoms — a little extra vibration, slightly worse economy — aren't an emergency. Once a misfire is frequent enough to trip a stored code and a steady check engine light, it's worth getting to soon rather than indefinitely, since unburned fuel from an ongoing misfire is exactly what damages a catalytic converter over time.
A FLASHING check engine light is different and urgent. That means an active misfire severe enough to be dumping raw fuel into the exhaust right now, which can destroy a catalytic converter in minutes. If the light is flashing, reduce load and stop driving as soon as you can do so safely.
What live data can't confirm
What it genuinely gives you: per-cylinder misfire counts and which specific cylinder code is stored, freeze frame conditions from when it set, and the swap test's clear, readable result once you've done it.
What it cannot do:
- See a cracked boot or carbon tracking. That's a hands-on, engine-off, cool look at the coil and plug.
- Measure a coil's actual output voltage or check its internal resistance. That's a bench or oscilloscope job once a coil is suspected.
- Confirm moisture intrusion definitively. A wet-weather pattern is a strong lean, not proof by itself.
