P0446 — EVAP vent control circuit
The EVAP system has two valves with opposite jobs. This code is about the one that's supposed to stay open to outside air — its electrical circuit, not a hole in the system and not a flow problem on the other valve.

The short version
P0446 means the computer found an electrical problem in the circuit that controls the EVAP vent valve — the valve, its wiring, or its response to being commanded. This is a circuit code about a part not doing what it's told, not a code about a hole or crack in the system.
Three EVAP complaints get lumped together and they're genuinely different: P0442 and P0455 are leak-size codes, set when the sealed system fails a pressure or vacuum test by a small or large amount. P0441 is a flow code on the purge side. P0446 is neither — it's an electrical fault on the vent side specifically. One honest wrinkle: some carmakers — GM is the well-known one — define P0446 as a vent-flow performance fault (the system couldn't vent) rather than a purely electrical one, which is why the blocked-vent check below sits so high on the list.

What the vent side does
EVAP has two ends with opposite jobs. A purge valve near the engine draws stored fuel vapor IN to be burned. A vent valve near the charcoal canister lets fresh air IN from outside — and it stays open most of the time, because the system isn't sealed for normal driving.
To run its periodic leak test, the computer has to seal the whole system, which means CLOSING the vent valve temporarily so it can apply pressure or vacuum and watch whether it holds. P0446 means that command — or the wiring carrying it, or the valve's electrical response to it — isn't behaving the way the computer expects. It's the mirror image of the purge side's own electrical fault code, P0443, and it's not a coincidence when both show up on the same wiring harness run.
The one free mechanical check
Before assuming an electrical fault, there's a genuinely common, well-documented, and completely free thing worth ruling out. On many vehicles the vent path runs through a small filter or a section of hose that sits low and open to the outside air — and it's a real, widely reported pattern for insects to build a nest inside that filter or line, physically blocking it.
A blocked vent path can keep the system from equalizing correctly and can trigger this code, or a related readiness failure, with a perfectly good valve and perfectly good wiring underneath it. Engine off, and only if you can reach it without getting under the vehicle: find the vent valve or filter — commonly near the charcoal canister, often toward the rear of the vehicle close to the fuel tank — and check that the opening isn't packed with debris. On many vehicles it's only reachable with the car on a lift, and that's a shop look, not a driveway one. It won't be the answer on every vehicle, but it's specific, real, and worth five minutes before anyone reaches for a part.
What live data can show
Fixiom doesn't command the vent valve open or closed directly — the same read-only design as the purge side. What you can do:
- Read the freeze frame for when it set — right after refueling, mid-drive, or at every key-on.
- Where the vehicle reports a commanded vent-valve state as live data, watch whether it ever changes over a drive. A value that never moves, regardless of what the computer should be commanding, points at a circuit that isn't getting through.
- Check EVAP readiness status. A vent circuit that can't respond usually keeps the monitor from finishing its test cleanly, which shows up as "not ready" rather than a specific pass or fail.
Likely causes, in order
- The vent valve or solenoid itself — stuck, corroded, or not responding electrically.
- The connector or wiring at the vent solenoid — open, shorted, or corroded, often exposed to the same road salt and debris as everything else near the fuel tank.
- A blocked vent filter or line — mechanical rather than electrical, but it produces a related symptom picture. See above.
- A shared connector or harness section also feeding the purge-side circuit, if P0441 or a purge circuit code is stored alongside it.
- The computer's driver circuit itself. Rare, and worth ruling everything else out first.
Is it safe to drive?
An emissions fault, not a mechanical one — the vehicle should drive completely normally with P0446 set. It will fail an emissions inspection wherever OBD2 codes are read, so it's a deadline rather than a mechanical concern.
What a phone can't see
What it genuinely gives you: the code, freeze frame, EVAP readiness status, and — where the vehicle reports it — a live commanded vent-valve value to watch for responsiveness.
What it cannot do:
- Command the vent valve to test it directly. Fixiom is read-only by design on every system, including EVAP.
- Physically inspect the valve, connector, or vent filter for debris or corrosion. The nest-in-the-filter check above is genuinely a look, not a reading.
- Test circuit continuity or check for a short. That's a meter and a wiring diagram.
Common questions
Is P0446 a leak code?+
No. P0442 and P0455 are leak-size codes, set when the sealed EVAP system fails a pressure or vacuum test. P0446 is an electrical circuit fault on the vent valve — the part that's supposed to open to outside air most of the time and close for the leak test. Different fault, different repair.
What's the difference between P0446 and P0441?+

Can bugs or debris really cause this code?+

Worth checking before assuming a part has failed.
